[ ILLUSTRATION WORK ] Children’s Book Illustration Process

The illustrator is the professional responsible for giving (graphic) life to your text.
If you just wrote your first children’s book, you’re probably looking for a children’s book illustrator for hire, correct?
And since it’s your first book, you probably do not know how the illustrator’s work happens. But I will try to explain in a simple way.

First: Read the Text

The first thing the illustrator does is read your manuscript and understand the story.
Do not be afraid to send your original to the artist. He is your production partner and will not steal your ideas.

Second: Children’s Book Storyboard

The second step of this fun journey is to create the children’s book storyboard. And you may ask, “But storyboarding is not a movie thing?”
Also. We use it for every kind of creation that involves some kind of storytelling.
In the case of children’s book, we use to create the sequence of pages that keep an interesting pace for the reader.

Third: Pencil Sketch Illustrations

If in the storyboard everything is very simple and basic, in the third step is different. It’s sketching time.
Here the details begin to appear and you have a better idea of how the final illustration will look.

Fourth: Coloring Illustrations

Sketch approved, it’s time to put color in the illustrations. In this step there are some decisions to be made, such as: coloring technique, color palette, etc … But I leave these details to describe better in another post. The point is that here the author already has the illustration ready to include in the book.

I hope you enjoyed this brief explanation of the freelance children’s book illustrator work.
